How can the substance of the urban development definition emerge from the development of housing typology itself?
The competition was announced as part of the Bavarian government’s experimental model project “Efficient construction—affordable housing—more affordable housing for Bavaria”. On the plot on the outskirts of Neu-Ulm, 70 apartments are to be built in two construction phases; about one half of these will be subsidised and the other privately financed. Urban planning and the first construction phase that has already been completed largely define the framework conditions, but within the building site there is scope for a reinterpretation of the surroundings area.
The project is intended as a contribution to the networked residential patchwork that characterises the green south of Neu-Ulm. The individual construction phases are combined to form a group of 3 “players” who vary elements and themes related to each other. The special arrangement of modules creates an attractive sequence of open spaces with specific qualities communicating equally to the north and south.
