Wouldn’t the wild mix of space, art, institution and city be the best starting point for a new adventure in the world of museums?
The new building of the State Gallery of Lower Austria is intended to be a landmark for the Art Mile Krems, but will also function as a central visitor centre for existing institutions such as the Kunsthalle Krems and the Caricature Museum. Further synergies between the institutions are looked for. The gallery’s approximately 3,000 m2 of exhibition space are intended to give the art collection of the Lower Austrian State Collections a new appearance, but also to accommodate temporary exhibitions. The possibility of a direct connection of the building to the shipping pier on the Danube was to be investigated within the framework of the competition.
The State Gallery of Lower Austria creates a new connection between the exhibition spaces that are concentrated at this location. The identity of the individual institutions will be strengthened in the new joint appearance and made visible to the outside world. The institutions are no longer inseparably bound to a particular building, but define themselves through their thematic content and curatorial concepts. All the exhibition spaces in the museal field are available to them for this purpose: Together with the State Gallery of Lower Austria, the Kunsthalle Krems, the Caricature Museum, the Literaturhaus and the World Heritage Centre are opening up a space of possibilities that can always be renegotiated on the basis of curatorial concepts. The distinction between high and popular culture, art enjoyment and tourism is undermined: the different ways of seeing and participating come into contact with each other.
